Portraits (Women)

Continuing on my portrait theme from a few days ago, today I am focusing on portraits of women. This is also a rather difficult category because people (mostly men) have been painting women for centuries, idealizing them, genderising them, and it becomes difficult to circumnavigate the "male gaze". Blah, too academic maybe. These are portraits (of women) I love.

I have to start with this one by Daniel Sprick, I don't know why I love it so much, maybe because it reminds me of a good friend of mine Mary (who is also and artist). 

My next favourite is this great piece by Michael Borremans.




And then to end off with - one of mine (a self portrait) from a few years back.

    Thank you for this post! I can't take my eyes off the Daniel Spriek. There's a whole woman in the present, with a past and a future; an interior and an exterior life. It's wonderful.
    Michael Borremans' portrait is also amazing ~ that ear!
    Lovely to see your self-portrait ~ though you're, I think, more beautiful in the flesh!
